How to split the bill at Christmas dinner (without doing maths at the table)
The table is booked, the turkey is gone, and the server puts one bill in the middle of the table. Six friends: two had wine, one had beer, one drove and had a soda, and one only drank water. Who pays what?
A lot of Christmas dinners with friends end with someone saying "let's just split it evenly". It is fast, but rarely fair when people ordered different things. Here is a simple way to split the bill at Christmas dinner, a worked example with example numbers, and how to do it in SplitSlip.
If your employer is paying for the party, there is nothing to split. This guide is for dinners you pay for yourselves: with friends, a team, a class or a club.
Who pays for what at a Christmas dinner?
Most things on a Christmas dinner bill fall into three groups:
- What each person ordered: their main course, a starter, a coffee.
- Drinks: wine, beer, mocktails, soft drinks or water.
- What you share: a dessert platter, a bottle for the table, a set booking fee.
What each person ordered, that person pays. What you share is split between the people who shared it.
Split evenly or by item?
Evenly works when everyone ordered roughly the same and nobody minds a few dollars either way.
By item is better when orders are different, especially drinks. Each person pays for what they actually had, and shared things are split between the people who shared them.
A good rule of thumb: agree on this before you order, not when the bill arrives.
Worked example: Christmas dinner for six
These are example numbers, not prices from a real restaurant. Amounts are before tax and tip. Emma paid the whole bill on her card.
| Person | Main | Drinks | Dessert platter (split 6 ways) | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emma | Turkey $32 | 2 glasses of mulled wine $24 | $6 | $62 |
| Liam | Turkey $32 | 2 beers $16 | $6 | $54 |
| Ava | Salmon $36 | Glass of wine $12 | $6 | $54 |
| Noah | Nut roast $26 | Soda $4 | $6 | $36 |
| Mia | Turkey $32 | Mocktail $9 | $6 | $47 |
| Lucas | Nut roast $26 | Water $0 | $6 | $32 |
| Total | $184 | $65 | $36 | $285 |
Split evenly, everyone would pay $47.50. Lucas, who had the nut roast and water, would pay $15.50 more than what he actually had, while Emma would pay $14.50 less.
Split by item, Liam and Ava send Emma $54 each, Noah sends $36, Mia $47 and Lucas $32.
Tax and tip: if the bill adds tax, SplitSlip splits it in proportion to what each person ordered. A tip included in the bill is shared in proportion to each person's items. So the person who ordered more also carries a bigger part of the tax and the included tip.
Drinks: the usual sticking point
It is almost always the drinks that make the difference. Food often costs about the same for everyone, while drinks can range from nothing to quite a lot per person. Three simple habits:
- Decide up front whether drinks are shared or paid individually.
- Bottles for the table are split between the people who drank from them, not everyone.
- The person who didn't drink shouldn't pay for other people's wine. It is the most common reason a "just split it evenly" bill feels unfair.
Christmas dinner at home: groceries and the host
If you hold the dinner at someone's home, one person often does the big grocery run and someone else buys the drinks. The same principle applies:
- Shared food is split evenly between everyone who ate.
- Drinks are split between the people who drank them, or everyone brings their own.
- Potluck: if everyone brings a dish, there may be nothing to split at all. Only log what someone bought for the whole group.
- The host: many groups let the host skip the food share as a thank-you for the space. Agree on that beforehand.
How to split the Christmas dinner bill in SplitSlip

- Share the guest link. Guests can view a shared link without an account. The link is view-only. To edit, they install SplitSlip and sign in.
- Settle up outside the app, for example by bank transfer or your usual payment app. SplitSlip doesn't move money.
For more on the method, see how to split a restaurant bill by item. For one shared check, see the bill splitter. If you have paper receipts from the grocery run, see how the receipt scanner works.
What does it cost?
You can add the bill by hand for free, or scan it. You get 50 free AI scans, and after that more AI scans are available as in-app purchases.
Christmas dinner bill: questions and answers
How do you split the bill at a Christmas dinner?
Agree beforehand whether you split evenly or by item. If people order differently, especially drinks, each person pays for what they had and shared things are split between the people who shared them. In SplitSlip you add the bill, give each item to the right person and see who owes whom.
Is it rude to ask to split by item?
No. It is completely normal, especially when someone isn't drinking. Mention it before you order, so nobody has to discuss it when the bill arrives.
How do we split a bottle of wine for the table?
Split it between the people who drank from it. In SplitSlip one item can be shared between several people.
How are tax and tip handled?
Tax is split in proportion to what each person ordered. A tip included in the bill is shared in proportion to each person's items.
Does everyone need the app?
No, not to see the split. Guests can view a shared link without an account. The link is view-only. To join and edit, they need to install SplitSlip and sign in.
Can we pay each other in SplitSlip?
No. SplitSlip shows who owes whom. You send the money outside the app, for example by bank transfer or your usual payment app.
What about a Christmas dinner at home?
Split the groceries between everyone who ate, and drinks between the people who drank them. Add the receipts to the same project so you see the whole split in one place.
